The Leonardo da Vinci II Project: Retail Education Mechanism for On-line Training in Europe, (REMOTE)

No. UK/03/B/F/PP162_010

The project aims to develop a new web-accessible design qualification that can be accessed by a wide range of students, including those with sensory disabilities, via content-rich CDs. Formal assessment, certification and online tutor support are managed through a specially developed distance learning centre.

PROJECT FINANCED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

The REMOTE project is an innovative ITC educational product aimed at supporting students with disabilities to develop the necessary skills to enter the workforce. Using a fat/thin delivery mechanism using a media-rich CD with low online bandwidth from a central online learning point, the product is compatible with today's Internet standards found in homes and businesses across Europe.

The product will result in a new web design technology qualification that will be available to learners at retail outlets in the UK, Spain, Romania and Germany and will be accredited by the UK National Awarding Body, which is part of from the partnership. The project is aimed at people with disabilities aged 16-64 who are part of or want to enter the labor market, through educational institutions, computer-related businesses and households across Europe.

The benefit for employers will be the possibility to support the development of skills in the field of e-business for disabled people, at their place of work, without incurring high training or transport costs.

For individuals, it offers the flexibility to learn when, where and at their own pace, which offers the possibility of accessing low-paid or unskilled jobs in parallel, thus enabling personal development and progress in employment.
